TALONAVICULAR JOINT
The talonavicular joint is particularly prone to cartilage damage and secondary osteophyte formation.
Prominent dorsal osteophytes make are leading to pain, palpable lump condyles and
potentially compression of the terminal branch of the deep peroneal nerve.
The talonavicular ligament overlies the joint.
Traction enthesopathy can occur particularly in running and kicking sports
Guided injections into the joint of feasible under ultrasound guidance.
An in view approach with the probe transferred to the joint have to navigate around the osteophytes and avoid overlying tendons and the neurovascular bundle.
TARSOMETATARSAL JOINTS
The tarsometatarsal joints are divided into 3 compartments.
However when degenerative changes are prominent, these compartments often communicate with each other
and therefore an injection into a single joint will likely distributed amongst the others.
The navicular cuneiform and calcaneocuboid joints are less frequently degenerate than the others.
Common area for neuropathic osteoarthropathy (Charcot)
Can be difficult to differentiate this from osteomyelitis
